This New Textile Combines Sustainability With Fashion

Posted by Unicorn Goods

From Entrepreneur:

Sustainability and safe manufacturing processes are paving the way for a number of new, innovative products.
Piñatex is an entirely new approach to natural, sustainable non-woven textiles made from pineapple leaves. Created in 2013 by Ananas Anam Ltd., Piñatex is a byproduct of pineapple farming, with no extra land, water, fertilizers or pesticides required to produce it.
The seemingly leather-like material is 100 percent vegan, but just as durable and versatile as traditional leathers. Piñatex is recognized as a pioneer in the development of innovative textiles by the fashion industry, and received PETA’s 2015 Innovation Award as a “Vegan Fashion Label.”

This Pineapple Leather is the Shit

Posted by Unicorn Goods

We beyond love this pineapple craze that's sweeping the nation right now. The emerging material has been featured in Huffington Post, The Guardian, and Fast Company. We can't wait until we can list items made with Piñatex so that you can #ShopPineapple. We expect great things from this company and it's founder. Until then, here are some sweet pictures of prototypes:

Piñatex is a new textile which is made with pineapple leaf fibers. Puma has made prototypes. Camper has done the same.

My name is Carmen Hijosa. I'm the founder and CEO of Ananas Anam, the company behind the project Piñatex.

Piñatex started as an alternative to leather, because that's my background. I realized that leather is and was at the time not such as sustainable product. I thought 'I need to do something about this.' That's when I started to look into the fibers.

I realized that pineapple fiber is so fine that it could be made into a mesh. This mesh goes through mechanical and and chemical processes to make it into a very strong product that can be used in bags, shoes, and furniture.

The purpose of Piñatex is to fill a niche in the market that is becoming more and more obvious between leather and petroleum-based textiles.

My purpose was to make something that was an alternative to leather. However, the textile has evolved and it has become a material in itself.

Design is not just about a product, but it's about a responsibility. We've got to think about the consequences of our thinking and our doing.
