How to Go Vegan in 2018

Going vegan has never been easier. Here are our simple steps to going vegan in the New Year. 

Step 1: Make Going Vegan Your New Year's Resolution

Going vegan as your New Year's resolution is a great way to catch the wave of self-improvement and promise making that can fuel your good intentions. If you haven't already, decide to make vegan your New Year's resolution. Announce it to your friends and family, so that they can help you stay accountable to yourself and provide you with the support you need.

Step 2: Sign Up with Veganuary

Sign up with Veganuary, the international organization dedicated to helping people who make going vegan their New Year's resolution follow through. Joining up with them will enable you to get the support and resources you need to make the transition.

Step 3: Establish Your Personal Plan & Guidelines

Everyone is different, so you'll need to evaluate where you are and where you want to be in your vegan journey. If you're already vegetarian, maybe you want to commit to not buying eggs and cheese but working through what you already have in your fridge. If you eat vegan at home, then you'll want to decide to eat vegan out of the house at restaurants, as well. Start a journal, or devise a formal plan and write it down.

Step 4: Have Patience with Yourself

Change is hard. Keep in mind that changing any habit or behavior is a process. You may take one step back for every step forward.

Step 5: Go in Phases

If going vegan all at once is too much for you, then you an always re-adjust your plan and go in phases. Maybe first you'll cut out meat, then fish and shellfish, then eggs and dairy, then animal by-products like beeswax and gelatin. If you're already vegan and want to veganize your home and wardrobe, then do that.

Step 6: Get Support

Join the expanding online networks of vegans around the world, and don't forget to also join forces with your local vegan support and advocacy groups, as well. No one can go it alone.

Step 7: Celebrate

Finally, celebrate your victories. Be sure to count your successes as you go and reward yourself in small ways. Finally cleared our dairy from your diet? Take yourself out for a vegan ice cream, throw a party, or buy yourself that beautiful hardcover vegan cookbook you've been dreaming about.
